Plumbing Courses

Where to begin with your plumbing career
When you start out, regardless of the route you take, you will need to complete both the NVQ and the City and Guilds 6129. The underpinning knowledge is most often the City and Guilds 6129 and the NVQ is provided by either City and Guilds or EAL. The qualifications you need are:
• City and Guilds 6129 Certificate in Basic Plumbing Level 2
• City and Guilds 6129 Certificate in Domestic Plumbing Level 3
and
• City and Guilds 6089 NVQ Level 3
or
• EAL NVQ Level 3
Depending on how far you want to go the next steps are…
ACS, CORGI and Part L
Accredited Certification Scheme (ACS)
ACS is a registered qualification and a necessity of you are to work with gas installations. It is also a requirement for CORGI registration.
Generally, the ACS is carried out at external, impartial assessment centres unless it is completed as part of another NVQ, the City and Guilds 6012.
There is a wide range of areas within the ACS qualification that can be assessed and you will be split into one of three categories, existing holder renewing, related holder such as a heating engineer adding to your qualifications or a new entrant to the industry.
CORGI
Any individual carrying out gas fitting, servicing or installations has a legal requirement to have CORGI approval. CORGI will check necessary qualifications and experience before granting this approval.
Part L
The Building Regulation Part L states that installers fitting new boilers must hold the City and Guilds 6084 proving they are qualified to meet Part L requirements.
